SAN ANTONIO — Two teens were shot Tuesday walking home from school on the North Side when a man approached the pair, grabbed one of them and then fired a gun when the other teen confronted him, according to police.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene at about 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 1700 block of Jackson-Keller Road, where a 16-year-old male and an 18-year-old female were walking home from school in a drainage ditch.

The apartments are just down the street from Lee High School and Jackson Keller Elementary School, which are both on lockdown, according to district officials.

A man, who police described as a black man in his 30s wearing Khakis and a black shirt, approached the two and put one hand on the girl’s shoulder.

The boy slapped the man’s hand away and the man responded by shooting the boy in the hand, police said. The bullet traveled through his hand and struck the girl in the leg.

The suspect fled the scene and a police helicopter is circling the area.

Both teens were transported to University Hospital and are expected to be fine.
